Self-publishing Consulting Added to Author Services

Announcement: We now offer self-publishing consulting in addition to many other author services and royalty-paying, non-fee-charging publishing!

So you’ve written your book and you want to self-publish…but you have hundreds of questions about the process. That’s normal. Don’t feel bad. Self-publishing can certainly be a mysterious creature, especially when you’re doing everything on your own and you have no one around to answer your questions. But…you don’t have to be alone. We can answer your questions and guide you through the process with our consulting service! Some good topics for us to discuss during our phone sessions: Title selection, production types (e-book, paperback, hardcover), determining your audience, book pricing, editing, book design, printing and distribution options, promotion, branding, web presence and marketing, copyright, LCCN, ISBN, barcode, and more! Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are you print-on-demand (POD)?

We use print-on-demand technology to print our books but do not consider ourselves a “print-on-demand publisher.” POD (print-on-demand) publishers are notorious for charging setup fees and various other fees. We do not charge authors we choose to publish and represent with the MINDSTIR name.

2. If MINDSTIR MEDIA decides to publish my book, will you try to sell me your author services?

Absolutely not. The author services are reserved for folks wishing to self-publish or submit their work elsewhere. If we agree to publish your book, we will absorb all costs, including but not limited to copyediting, proofreading, book design, distribution, marketing, etc.

3. Do you offer advances?

We generally offer a small advance with a royalty rate higher than the industry standard.

4. If MINDSTIR MEDIA publishes my book, will it end up in bookstores?

We will offer a “short-discount” (e.g. 40% wholesale) to bookstores and therefore cannot guarantee your book will be stocked nationwide. MINDSTIR MEDIA utilizes Ingram and Baker & Taylor, leading distributors. Unfortunately, though, it is our experience that many booksellers will not stock a book with a short-discount but will order upon customer request. It should be noted that the majority of our sales are executed via online retailers such as Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and numerous other domestic and international websites. We also use the new Espresso Book Machine®, an “ATM for books,” to sell our titles.

5. What is a “query letter”?

Please read this article.

6. How long can I expect to wait for a response to my query letter?

Our normal response time is 1-2 weeks.

7. Does MINDSTIR MEDIA respond to all query letters?

We try to respond to all queries. If you have not heard from us after two weeks, please send us a follow-up email.

8. Does MINDSTIR MEDIA accept submissions for all genres?

We accept submissions for everything but poetry, erotica, and manuscripts with excessive foul language or sex.

9. Why aren’t rates listed for all of the author services?

We do not display a complete list of rates because many of our services can be customized depending on the customer’s budget. If you have questions about pricing, do not hesitate to contact us.
