How to Relaunch a Book That Isn’t Selling

By MindStir

Your book launch did not go the way you expected.

Maybe sales were strong for the first few days and then disappeared. Maybe the book never gained meaningful traction at all. Perhaps months or even years have passed since publication and you are wondering whether it is too late to try again.

It isn’t necessarily too late.

Books do not have the same short shelf life as many other products. If the content remains relevant and the book is still available for purchase, there may be opportunities to introduce it to new readers.

Instead of continuing the same marketing activities that have not worked, consider a book relaunch.

A relaunch gives you an opportunity to evaluate what went wrong, improve the way the book is presented, and build a new promotional campaign around it.

Here is how to approach the process.

Step 1: Figure Out Why the Book Isn’t Selling

Do not spend more money promoting the book until you have considered why the original campaign failed.

There are several possibilities.

Perhaps too few people saw the book.

Maybe the cover does not compete well within its genre.

The book description may not be persuasive.

The price could be creating resistance.

The Amazon listing may need optimization.

There may not be enough legitimate reviews or other forms of social proof.

The original advertising may have targeted the wrong audience.

Or perhaps there was never a real marketing campaign beyond announcing the book to friends, family members, and social media followers.

Try to identify the likely problem before determining the solution.

Step 2: Reevaluate Your Target Reader

Who is this book actually for?

Authors sometimes answer this question too broadly.

“My book is for everyone” is rarely a useful marketing strategy.

A marketing campaign becomes easier to build when you can clearly describe the person most likely to want the book.

For fiction, think about genre, subgenre, comparable authors, themes, age group, and the emotional experience readers are seeking.

For nonfiction, think about the problem the reader wants to solve, the information they need, the transformation they want, or the subject they are interested in.

Once you understand the audience, you can evaluate every part of the relaunch against it.

Step 3: Revisit the Cover

A relaunch is an excellent time to reconsider your cover.

You do not necessarily need to redesign it. However, you should evaluate it honestly.

Look at the bestselling and popular books in your category.

Place your cover next to them.

Does yours look like it belongs?

Does it look professionally produced?

Can the title be read at thumbnail size?

Does the design communicate the correct genre or subject?

Would you click on it if you did not know the author?

If the cover is a weak point, sending significantly more traffic to the listing may simply expose the problem to more people.

Improving the product presentation before increasing promotion can make more sense.

Step 4: Rewrite Your Book Description

Your book description should help sell the book.

For fiction, that generally means creating intrigue, establishing stakes, introducing the central conflict, and making readers want to know what happens.

For nonfiction, it means communicating why the subject matters and what the reader can gain from the book.

Avoid writing the description solely from the author’s perspective.

Instead, think about what the prospective reader needs to hear before deciding to buy.

A relaunch provides an opportunity to rewrite and strengthen this copy.

Step 5: Review Your Pricing

Compare your book with similar titles in your category.

What are readers accustomed to paying?

Consider the format as well. Hardcover, paperback, and eBook buyers may have different expectations.

You do not necessarily need to lower the price.

In fact, a very low price can sometimes conflict with premium or authority positioning.

The goal is to determine whether your pricing is reasonable for the book, audience, format, and competitive environment.

Temporary promotional pricing can also potentially become part of a relaunch strategy when appropriate.

Step 6: Strengthen Your Social Proof

If your book has been available for months but has very few reviews, that may affect how new shoppers perceive it.

A relaunch can be an opportunity to introduce the book to additional legitimate reviewers and readers.

Authors should never attempt to manufacture fake reviews or control what an honest reviewer says.

Instead, focus on increasing the number of genuine opportunities for people to discover, read, and potentially review the book.

Existing publicity can also provide social proof.

If you have received media coverage, awards, endorsements, interviews, or other recognition since the original launch, determine whether those achievements can appropriately be incorporated into your current author and book marketing.

Step 7: Optimize Your Amazon Presence

Before sending new traffic to Amazon, review the complete listing.

Examine your:

  • Title and subtitle
  • Cover
  • Book description
  • Author biography
  • Categories
  • Keywords
  • Pricing
  • Formats
  • Reviews
  • Author page

Think of the Amazon listing as a sales page.

Marketing can send potential readers there. The listing then has to do its job.

This is an important distinction because more traffic does not necessarily solve a conversion problem.

Step 8: Develop a New Advertising Strategy

If you did not advertise the book originally, a relaunch gives you an opportunity to start.

If you did advertise and the campaign did not perform well, examine why before repeating it.

Amazon advertising can potentially place a book in front of shoppers searching for relevant titles, genres, authors, and subjects.

Other advertising platforms can potentially help introduce the book to readers outside Amazon.

The appropriate approach depends on your audience and objectives.

Advertising should also be monitored. Campaigns can generate useful information about which audiences, keywords, or messages attract interest.

The goal is not simply to spend money on clicks. It is to learn how to reach the right readers efficiently.

Step 9: Add Publicity to the Relaunch

A relaunch needs a reason for people to pay attention again.

Publicity can help create that reason.

Depending on the author and book, opportunities may include press releases, articles, interviews, podcasts, television appearances, online publications, local media, or subject-specific media.

Nonfiction authors may be able to build publicity around their expertise.

Memoir authors may have a compelling personal story.

Fiction authors may have interesting themes, inspiration, settings, or backgrounds that provide potential angles.

The book itself is not always the only story.

Sometimes the author is the story.

Step 10: Create a Coordinated Relaunch Campaign

The biggest mistake would be treating each of these ideas as an unrelated task.

A stronger approach is to coordinate them.

For example, an author might improve the Amazon listing, update promotional materials, generate new review activity, begin an advertising campaign, pursue publicity, appear on podcasts, promote through email, and increase social media activity within the same general period.

Each channel can potentially reinforce the others.

Someone may see an interview today, encounter an advertisement tomorrow, see the book mentioned somewhere else next week, and eventually decide to purchase it.

Marketing often involves multiple points of contact.

A coordinated campaign increases the number of ways a potential reader can encounter your book.

Step 11: Give the Relaunch Enough Time

Do not judge the entire campaign based on a few days of activity.

Some marketing tactics can create immediate attention. Others build visibility and credibility over time.

Advertising campaigns may need optimization.

Publicity efforts can take time to develop.

Reviews accumulate gradually.

Interviews may be scheduled weeks in advance.

Readers may encounter your book several times before deciding to purchase it.

Set realistic expectations and evaluate the campaign based on meaningful periods of activity rather than reacting to every day’s sales numbers.

Step 12: Keep Marketing After the Relaunch

The relaunch should not necessarily end with another abrupt stop.

If you succeed in generating renewed attention, consider how you will maintain it.

That might involve ongoing advertising, regular publicity efforts, new interviews, social media content, email marketing, promotions, author-platform development, or other sustained activities.

Think of the relaunch as the beginning of a new marketing phase rather than a one-time event.

Can You Relaunch a Book Years After It Was Published?

Potentially, yes.

The age of the book matters less than whether it is still relevant and marketable.

A novel can find readers years after publication.

A memoir can receive new attention because of an event, media opportunity, anniversary, or renewed interest in its subject.

An evergreen nonfiction book may remain useful for years.

A business or professional book may become relevant to a new audience because of changes in the author’s career or industry.

You can also create new promotional angles.

Perhaps you have received an award since publication.

Maybe you have built a larger audience.

Perhaps you have appeared in the media.

Maybe a topic discussed in your book has suddenly become timely.

The question is not simply how old the book is. The question is whether you can give readers a compelling reason to discover it now.

Should You Republish the Book or Just Relaunch It?

These are two different decisions.

A marketing relaunch does not necessarily require republishing the book.

If the book itself is professionally produced and the primary problem is visibility, you may simply need a better promotional strategy.

However, if you identify substantial issues with editing, design, positioning, or other aspects of the publication, you may want to investigate whether a revised or new edition makes sense.

That decision should be based on the condition of the book rather than disappointment with sales alone.

Your First Launch Doesn’t Have to Be Your Last Opportunity

Authors sometimes view publication as a single moment.

The book launches, the market responds, and the result feels permanent.

It does not have to work that way.

Marketing creates new opportunities for discovery.

A book that did not receive enough attention during its initial release can potentially be introduced to entirely new audiences months or years later.

The key is not simply to “try marketing again.”

Learn from the first attempt.

Identify what needs improvement.

Strengthen the book’s presentation.

Define the audience.

Develop a strategy.

Then give the book a genuine second promotional push.
