MindStir Media vs. Lulu: Publishing Platform or Professional Publishing Team?

MindStir Media vs. Lulu: Publishing Platform or Professional Publishing Team?

By MindStir

Lulu and MindStir Media both help authors publish books, but that is where the similarity begins to break down.

The easiest way to understand the difference is this:

Lulu gives you the tools to publish a book. MindStir Media gives you a team to help you publish one professionally.

That distinction matters because not every author wants to become his or her own editor, production manager, designer, publishing strategist and marketer.

Some do.

For those authors, Lulu can be a very useful platform.

For authors who want professional guidance, custom book development, ongoing support and substantial help marketing the finished book, MindStir Media offers a very different experience.

Lulu Is Fundamentally a Self-Publishing Platform

Lulu is best understood as publishing infrastructure.

The company provides authors with tools for creating, printing, selling and distributing books. Authors can upload their own files, use Lulu’s built-in cover creator, choose printing specifications and make their books available through Lulu’s distribution system.

That model has obvious advantages.

Lulu can give a knowledgeable independent author considerable control over the process. If you already have a finished manuscript, professionally prepared files and a clear idea of what you are doing, the platform can provide the technology necessary to turn those files into physical books.

The important part is understanding what Lulu itself does not provide.

According to Lulu’s own support documentation, its team cannot manually publish a book for an author and cannot provide advice on formatting, editing, illustration, design or marketing. Authors who need those services are directed to outside professionals and partner companies.

That is not a criticism of Lulu.

It is simply what the product is designed to be.

Lulu is a platform.

It is not an in-house professional publishing team.

Lulu Actually Makes This Distinction Quite Clear

There is no need to speculate about whether Lulu provides professional author services.

Lulu says directly that it does not currently offer paid publishing or marketing services such as copyediting, cover design or formatting.

The company also confirms that it does not have in-house designers for authors. Instead, authors who need editing, formatting, cover design or similar assistance can choose from outside professionals listed through Lulu’s partner marketplace.

That means the responsibility for assembling the publishing team ultimately rests with the author.

You may need one person for editing.

Another for cover design.

Someone else for interior formatting.

Perhaps another person or agency for marketing.

You then need to coordinate those professionals, manage the project and make sure the finished files work together properly before they are uploaded to Lulu.

Some authors enjoy that level of control.

Others have absolutely no interest in becoming a publishing project manager.

MindStir Media Was Built for the Author Who Wants Someone Else to Manage the Details

MindStir Media takes almost the opposite approach.

Rather than giving authors a publishing platform and asking them to assemble the rest of the process, MindStir provides professional publishing services through an organized team.

Every MindStir author is assigned a dedicated project manager to help guide the project through publication. The company also provides ongoing mentoring from founder J.J. Hebert, a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

Depending on the publishing program selected, MindStir can coordinate professional editing, custom cover design, custom interior design, ebook production, distribution and other components of publication within the same relationship.

MindStir’s current publishing guide also specifically distinguishes its design process from template-based production, describing its cover and interior work as original custom design rather than template-driven design.

For an author who wants a polished book but does not want to independently hire and supervise a collection of freelancers, that difference can be enormous.

The Real Question Is How Much Work You Want to Do Yourself

Many comparisons between self-publishing companies revolve around price.

That can be misleading when the two companies are not actually selling the same thing.

With Lulu, much of the value comes from the technology and production infrastructure.

You bring the finished product to the platform.

Lulu helps manufacture, sell and distribute it.

With MindStir Media, the author is paying for professional services and guidance that occur before the final files ever reach the printing stage.

That includes the people who help develop the manuscript into a finished commercial product.

There is no universal answer as to which model is better.

It depends on the author.

If you are comfortable sourcing your own editor, evaluating cover designers, arranging formatting, checking print specifications and managing marketing yourself, Lulu may give you exactly what you need.

If that sounds like another full-time job, MindStir Media is probably the more natural fit.

A Cover Creator Is Not the Same Thing as a Cover Designer

This is one area where the difference is particularly easy to understand.

Lulu provides authors with a built-in Cover Creator. Authors can add text, images and design elements themselves, or they can prepare their own cover files using Lulu’s specifications. Lulu also provides templates to help authors get started.

Those tools can be useful.

They do not replace a professional designer.

A professional book cover is not simply an image with a title placed on top of it. Good design considers genre expectations, typography, visual hierarchy, thumbnail visibility, reader psychology and how the book will compete alongside other titles in the marketplace.

MindStir Media approaches cover design as a professional creative service rather than simply supplying an author with software for assembling a cover.

That difference becomes especially important for authors who want their books to look comparable to professionally published titles rather than merely technically acceptable for printing.

The Same Problem Applies to Editing

An author uploading a book to Lulu is expected to arrive with the content essentially ready for publication.

Lulu does not edit the manuscript for you.

It does not review the book and tell you that a chapter needs restructuring.

It does not assign an editor who becomes familiar with your manuscript.

If you need editing, Lulu directs you toward outside professionals.

Again, there is nothing wrong with that approach.

Experienced independent authors often build their own publishing teams.

The difference is convenience and accountability.

With a managed publishing company such as MindStir Media, the editing, design and production processes can be coordinated within one publishing relationship instead of being divided among several unrelated vendors.

That can make communication considerably easier, particularly for a first-time author.

Then There Is the Question Lulu Cannot Solve With a Printing Platform

You have published your book.

Now what?

This is where the difference between Lulu and MindStir Media becomes considerably larger.

Printing and distributing books is an important part of publishing, but those activities do not create demand.

A book can be available around the world and still remain practically invisible.

Lulu provides educational resources about book marketing, including guides, videos, podcasts and other materials.

What Lulu does not do is provide its own managed book marketing service. Its own support documentation specifically states that marketing services are not provided directly by Lulu.

MindStir Media has taken a dramatically different approach.

Book marketing has become one of the company’s core specialties.

MindStir offers authors access to professional marketing and publicity services designed to increase visibility beyond simply listing a book for sale. The company describes itself as helping authors not only publish and distribute books, but market them as well.

That distinction may ultimately be more important than anything that happens during production.

Distribution Does Not Equal Marketing

This point deserves emphasis because the two concepts are often confused.

Distribution means that someone can buy your book.

Marketing gives that person a reason to know the book exists.

A book listed through major online retailers has distribution.

A book being actively advertised, publicized, promoted or positioned for a specific audience has marketing.

One does not automatically create the other.

Lulu is particularly strong as a printing, ecommerce and distribution platform.

MindStir Media combines distribution with a much broader set of professional publishing and marketing services.

For an author whose primary objective is simply availability, Lulu may be sufficient.

For an author whose objective is visibility, the comparison changes considerably.

MindStir Media Also Provides Something a Technology Platform Cannot

There are plenty of tutorials explaining how to publish a book.

There are fewer people who can tell you what actually makes sense for your particular book.

That is where mentorship becomes valuable.

MindStir Media authors receive ongoing access to guidance from J.J. Hebert, who founded the company after becoming an author himself and has since built a career around publishing and marketing books.

That creates a very different relationship from interacting primarily with publishing software and support documentation.

An author may want to know whether the title is working.

The cover may need another direction.

The marketing strategy may need to change.

The author may be unsure which promotional opportunity is worth pursuing.

Those are not technical support questions.

They are publishing judgment calls.

A platform can explain where to click.

An experienced publishing professional can help explain what to do next.

Lulu Gives Authors Freedom, but Freedom Comes With Responsibility

One of Lulu’s greatest strengths is also the reason it will not be right for every author.

You control a tremendous amount of the process.

That means you are also responsible for it.

You are responsible for ensuring that the manuscript is properly edited.

You are responsible for design.

You are responsible for producing publication-ready files.

You are responsible for evaluating outside vendors when you need professional assistance.

You are responsible for marketing.

For experienced self-publishers, that independence can be attractive.

For a first-time author who simply wants professionals to take the project from manuscript through publication, it can be overwhelming.

That is where a full-service company begins to justify its cost.

You are not simply paying someone to push buttons that you could theoretically push yourself.

You are paying to avoid having to learn an entirely separate profession just to publish one book.

MindStir Media vs. Lulu: Which Is Better?

The answer depends largely on the kind of publishing experience you want.

Lulu is an excellent option for authors who want a self-service publishing platform.

If you already have professional files, understand publishing production and want access to print-on-demand, ecommerce and distribution technology, Lulu provides valuable infrastructure.

The company does not pretend to be something it is not. Lulu itself explains that professional editing, design and marketing are handled by outside providers rather than Lulu employees.

MindStir Media is better suited to authors who want a managed professional publishing experience.

Instead of assembling a team yourself, you can work with a publishing company that coordinates professional production, assigns a project manager, provides bestselling-author mentorship and offers substantial marketing capabilities after publication.

That makes the choice relatively straightforward.

If you want publishing software and infrastructure, Lulu deserves consideration.

If you want publishing professionals, MindStir Media offers substantially more.

You Can Publish a Book Yourself. The Question Is Whether You Want To.

Self-publishing has become remarkably accessible.

That is a good thing.

Technology has removed barriers that once prevented thousands of authors from reaching readers.

But accessibility can sometimes create the illusion that publishing is simply a matter of uploading a PDF.

It is not.

A professional book still requires judgment.

It requires editing.

It requires design.

It requires production experience.

It requires positioning.

And if you actually want people to discover it, it requires marketing.

Lulu gives independent authors the technology to manage much of that journey themselves.

MindStir Media was built for authors who would rather have experienced professionals travel that journey with them.

Neither philosophy is inherently right for everyone.

But they are not interchangeable.

Lulu is a publishing platform. MindStir Media is a publishing partner.

For an author who wants a professional team behind the book—and a marketing operation ready when the book is finished—that difference is difficult to overlook.
