I recently interviewed MindStir’s own Suneel Dhand, M.D., the author of High Percentage Wellness Steps: Natural, Proven, Everyday Steps to Improve Your Health & Well-being (available as paperback & Kindle editions) and the forthcoming title Thomas Jefferson: Lessons from a Secret Buddha. The interview is as follows. Enjoy!
1. What made you decide to write High Percentage Wellness Steps?
As a doctor, I feel that the medical profession does not spend nearly enough time focusing on the fundamental principles of health and well-being. At a time when we are privileged to have access to so many new miraculous treatments and cures, simple preventative medicine is still always the best option whenever possible. I wanted to write a book that emphasized the power of natural lifestyle steps in bringing about huge improvements to our overall level of wellness.
2. Why did you decide to self-publish instead of go the traditional route?
Modern technology is changing the publishing world completely, and the divide between the two is becoming increasingly blurred. Traditional publishing is much more time consuming, with less control over your work. Self-publishing is quite the opposite.
3. Could you tell us more about the charities you’re helping with this book?
I am donating profits to a number of health related causes, involving humanitarian relief, medical research and other special projects for those suffering from terrible illness. These include the Red Cross, Make a Wish Foundation, and organizations devoted to cancer, cardiovascular and neurological research.
4. Do you plan on writing any other health & wellness books in the future?
Yes, most certainly. There are so many important topics in this area, and I have other ideas that I would like to start working on soon.
5. Tells us a bit about your new fiction book that is soon to be released…
The book, Thomas Jefferson: Lessons from a Secret Buddha, combines aspects of Eastern philosophy with the spirit of the American Revolution. Being from an Indian background, I would hear stories growing up about India’s freedom struggle. While living in Massachusetts, I discovered more about the events leading up to the Revolution. I drew instant parallels between the two historical moments, and that same universal desire for liberty. Then there’s Thomas Jefferson, a true American legend who was an extraordinary man in lots of different ways. The rest…well…you will have to read the book to find out!
6. What would you say is the most challenging part of writing a book — and most enjoyable?
I would say that the challenging part is making sure you have enough interesting subject matter to keep the reader interested, especially with non-fiction. The most enjoyable part is being able to creatively bring your ideas to reality.
7. Have you always wanted to write books?
Yes, ever since I was a young boy I have always enjoyed books and writing. My mom and dad have kept all of my childhood writing in boxes in the attic, and we often look over them with amusement when I visit home.
8. Do you have a favorite writing spot? If so, tell us about it…
I write in a number of different places, including many tea and coffee shops. My favorite though has to be Boston Public Library—a magnificent and inspiring building.
9. Do you listen to music while you write or do you prefer complete silence?
I prefer silence, with perhaps a little gentle background noise.
10. What is your favorite book of all time?
It would have to be between Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder and Team of Rivalsby Doris Kearns Goodwin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!, March 20, 2012 By Love to be an Equestrian (MA) – See all my reviews This review is from: High Percentage Wellness Steps: Natural, Proven, Everyday Steps to Improve Your Health & Well-being (Paperback)
This book is well written, and I enjoyed reading it. The book is divided into an organized fashion to help the reader sorting out how to initiate a healthy way of living. I like the author’s humor and that he shares his own personal experience of what has worked for him…. a nice personal touch!!! In addition, the topics are backed with extensive researches, which I valued, because I believe in evidence-based practices, since I am in the health care profession myself. In some chapters/sections, the introductions comprise of interesting added twists with current, and historical events. Furthermore, the book also encompasses both western and eastern philosophies. It’s an easy book to read and a must-read book for anyone who is interested in taking the first step to wellness.
